So, there is some truth to Red’s with meat and White with fish/poultry. That’s just the surface of all the possibilities when pairing food and wines. Create your own pairing in learning the basics of wine and food. Here are a few steps on how to select. Even more, learn what to look for in recipes in order to make a wine match.

Admittedly, wine and food pairing is a subjective endeavor. What tastes good to you might not taste so great to someone else, and so on and so forth. However, having a little wine pairing knowledge in your back pocket to impress your guests or your date is certainly not a bad move. So, without further ado, here is your wine and food pairing primer.

Fine Wine and Food knowledge and pairing is a subjective endeavor. Seems like what tastes good to you might not be that way for other and vise versa. While having some wine pairing knowledge in your hip pocket you may just impress guest or even your date. So, here are some guidelines to help out.

Sparkling: (Champagne, Cava, Prosecco)

Food:

Halibut, eggs, oysters

Pair: Light/Salty

Avoid: Red, Spicy or Cream Sauce

Cheese: Gruyere

Dry White: (Pinot Grigio, Souvignon Blanc)

Food: White meat, Salad, Mushrooms

Pair: Light, Tangy

Avoid: Red Meat, Blue Cheese

Cheese: Gouda

Rich White: (Chardonnay, Voigaer, Ressuanne)

Food: Creamy Sauce, Buttery fish, Pasta Salad

Pair: Fatty, Creamy

Avoid: Smoked Meat, Asian dishes, Tomatoes

Cheese: Camemhert

Sweet White: (Riesling, Moscato, Gerwurtzaminer)

Food: Spicy food, Curry, Fruit Desert

Pair: Spicy, Sweet

Avoid: Foods sweeter dark chocolate

Cheese: Brie

Light Red: (Pinot Noir, Gamay, Zweigelt

Food: White Meat, Cured Meat, Truffles.

Pair: Earthy, Woody

Avoid: BBQ Sauce, Smoked foods, Salty Food

Cheese: Swiss

Medium Red: (Cabernet Savignon, Bordeoux, Melot

Food: Red Meat, Braised Dishes, Potatoes

Pair: Rich, Savory

Avoid: Spicy Food, Raw Fish, Oysters

Cheese: Gorgonzola

Bold Red: (Syrah, Malbex, Mouruadra

Food: Stew, Lamb, Pate

Pair: Bold, Fatty

Avoid: Seafood, Eggs, Light Salad

Cheese: Smoked Cheddar
